About the Item

An earthenware planter by Théodore Deck, with a celadon enamelled cover and a dragon among clouds decor. Signed "Th. Deck" circa 1890 Paris (France) Treated in the style of Chinese porcelain with a celadon cover from the Qing dynasty, this large vase by the famous Theodore Deck also borrows from the Far East for its shape and decoration, mixing a frieze of swastikas with Buddhist sources and powerful Chinese dragons surrounded by "ci" clouds. Here, Deck cites the Kangxi or later celadons, which delighted Europeans from the end of the 17th century thanks to the parts imported by the Indian Companies. This neo-Chinese planter has on its belly the most important animal of good omen in Chinese mythology: a dragon. Perhaps without understanding its scope, Theodore Deck attributed three claws per leg as if the object was intended for a high Chinese dignitary. However, this is not what caught Theodore Deck's attention at the end of the 19th century, but more certainly the metonymic evocation of China in a European world bathed in Exotism and Japonisme during the second half of the 19th century. Indeed, the sack of the Emperor's Summer Palace of China by French troops in 1860, the colonization of Indochina, the Chinese museum opened by Empress Eugenie at Fontainebleau Castle and the opening of Japan foster cultural exchanges and imports. With this very beautiful planter, like his contemporary Edouard Lièvre, Théodore Deck gave in to Sino-Japanese fashion. He shows an excellent ability to integrate Chinese models and demonstrates his talent to surpass them with the quality of his ceramic, whose glaze is elegantly jaspered. H : 32 cm, L : 55 cm
