About the Item

An elegant antique pair of French bronze saucer shaped mantel campana urns, circa 1870. This lovely pair of dark patinated bronze saucer shaped mantel urns, feature beaded gadrooned rims, high relief lotus leaves and flowers. The bases are cast with leaves and Stand on tall round Carrara Marble stepped column pedestals with beaded ormolu details. This high quality hot cast solid bronze was produced using the traditional "lost wax" process, otherwise known as the "cire perdue" method. The craftsmanship is second to none throughout all aspects of this pair and they are sure to add an unparalleled touch of class to your home. Dimensions in cm: Height 17 x width 12 x depth 12 Dimensions in inches: Height 7 inches x width 5 inches x depth 5 inches Lost Wax Method sometimes called by the French name of cire perdue or the Latin, cera perduta is the process by which a bronze or brass is cast from an artists sculpture. In Industrial uses, the modern process is called investment casting. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, but the steps which are usually used in casting small bronze sculptures in a modern bronze foundry are generally quite standardised. Carrara marble - is a type of white or blue-grey marble popular for use in sculpture and building decor. It is quarried at the city of Carrara in the province of Massa-Carrara (Tuscany, Italy). Carrara marble has been used since the time of Ancient Rome; the Pantheon and Trajan's Column in Rome are constructed of it. Many sculptures of the Renaissance, such as Michelangelo's David, were carved from Carrara marble. For Michelangelo at least, Carrara marble was valued above all other stone, except perhaps that of his own quarry in Pietrasanta. The Marble Arch in London and the Duomo di Siena are also made from this stone, as are the interiors of Manila Cathedral, the cold-white marbles of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque and the campus of Harvard Medical School.
