About the Item
Copper containers of varying shapes and sizes have been used in Spanish homes and kitchens for many centuries. Copper and its alloys were particularly popular metals for storing and preparing foodstuffs, not only because they were they durable, but because these metals exhibited natural antibacterial properties. This particular jug, most likely made for the storage and serving of liquids such as water or milk, exhibits strong Hispano-Moresque influences. The baluster shape, symmetrical wing-like handles, and fitted, domed lid all reference Spanish Arab design traditions. In various places on the container, most obviously around the center of the jug at its widest point, can be seen a geometric, gold colored, zigzagging line. This is a seam where two pieces of copper have been brazed together. Often referred to as a ‘dovetail’ (more correctly a ‘cramped’ or ‘castellated’ joint) this seam was a time-consuming hand process, and demonstrates a fair level of skill and craftsmanship. The handles are attached with large hand-hammered rivets, and both the rim of the mouth and the foot on which the jug sits are rolled copper. The wrought iron stand is posterior, most probably made in the 20th century and added for decorative purposes.

Circa 1800 French Copper 2-Handled Vase with Chariot and Cartouche
Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-worked circa 1800, this French vase is adorned with a chariot and cartouche scene. Some of the elements were hammered from the front side, in a metalworking technique known as chasing, while other motifs were worked from the verso side, which is known as repousse. It is not uncommon for the two methods to be used in tandem, and the work of this particular artisan is top notch.
The 5 ¾ diameter opening is flanked by two flared out handles that terminate on the widest part of the main body. A flowing foliate margent (repousse) adorns the top of the body, beneath the lightly textured thick neck (chased). The leaf theme continues beneath a thin ring of roundels that frames the upper body, with a sprawling foliage display that wraps around the lower body, interrupted by a pair of cartouches. One scene depicts a man in a toga with a laurel wreath crown...
