Christoph Zange Black Raku Cermonial Tea Bowl and Cover Storage Vessel
About the Item
Christoph Zange : Black Raku, ceremonal tea bowl & cover or storage vessel
Raku tea bowls are made by moulding pinching, sculpting by hand; glazing by brush and firing in a muffle kiln fuelled by charcoal removing them from the hot kiln so they cool extremely quickly creating unique colours and patterns. The traditional Raku process is believed to reflect enlightened life, as the firing process is daring and the pottery is derived from the earth
The different textures, colours and surfaces of this tea bowl demonstrate the excitement and immediacy of Raku. The process demands skill from the artist who removes the piece from a red-hot kiln requiring physicality and intuition as there is a creative unpredictability to Raku, which is influenced by the fire.
This tea bowl evokes a beautiful organic feel of ancient landscape with a soft palette and numerous different textures. It captures the spirit of the earth and the artist has used masterful skill and techniques to create a wonderful vessel.
Christoph Zange won The Walter Gebauer Ceramic Award for 'The Drinking Vessel' in 2006.

The totemic form and pitted and pierced surfaces draw on the abstract landscape and tactility of elements in nature. matte glazes and oxides have been skillfully used to enhance the rich textures of the surfaces and the organic aesthetic. - Wallwork is one of the great individualists in British pottery, developing an archetypal language that echoed some of the wider artistic obsessions of that period, what the art critic Herbert Read called the “postwar ferment” of sculptural activity. - This piece was made during 1960-1965, the time that Wallwork was sharing a studio in Greenwich with Bernard Rooke and comes from a private collection along with a waterscape vase by Rooke and a bottle by Robert Fournier...Category
