About the Item
French Majolica Large Urns,
A Pair,
Circa 1870-90
The pair of French large majolica flower urns are each raised on four leaf-shaped feet. The urns are of a quadafoil shape. On one side are molded flowering bamboo-like stems crossing the front of the urn in greens and browns against the blue ground background. The reverse side is similarly decorated but with a large white stork flying across the scenes. On each side of the urns are handles in the form of a wolf's head.
The urns are very striking with a large dramatic scale and good color and subject. The form is unusual in that they seem based on a garden seat shape without the top.
Dimensions: 22 3/4 inches high x 19 inches wide x 14 inches deep. Internal dimensions: 12 inches x 12 inches.
Condition: The condition is good with a flake inside one lip and frits to several feet on the very bottom invisibly repaired.
