George III Neo Classical Wine/Water Jug by Smith & Sharp, London, 1775.

About the Item

A very fine & unusual George III Neo Classical Wine/Water Jug made in London in 1775 by Daniel Smith & Robert Sharp. The Jug stands on an applied foot which is decorated with bold beading. The baluster shaped main body is beautifully decorated with blue bell swags tied with ribbons, all in raised relief. The swags are interspersed with raised wheel motifs. The upper section also displays smaller bluebell garlands and wheel motifs. The unusual "Sparrow" Beak Spout is decorated with reeding and displays a raying shell beneath and an unusual heart shaped pouring spout. The domed fruitwood handle is attached to the main body with triangular and cast shell mouldings. The high domed, hinged, cover has a beaded rim and is decorated with the same swags and wheel motifs that are seen on the main body and terminates in a Neo Classical beaded urn finial. The side of the main body displays a set of contemporary script initials, with trailing foliate surround, typical of the designs of the 1770's. This was a design which was peculiar to the workshops of Smith & Sharp, who enjoyed the patronage of George III and the Prince of Wales, later George IV, when he was furnishing Carlton House. This piece is of a very good weight and is in exceptional condition, bearing a good clear set of marks up in the foot. Additional information: Height: 11.1 inches, 27.75 cm. Diameter at the widest point of the main body: 5 inches, 12.5 cm
