Large French Sevres Style Bronze Mounted Hand Painted Porcelain Lidded Urn
About the Item
This is a large and heavy French Sevres style patinated bronze mounted porcelain lidded urn. It is hand painted in a white and sky blue background. It depicts a scene of an 18th century gentleman greeting a lady in the front center body of the urn. The scene is framed with a gilt garland made of C-scrolls and rocailles that are painted pink, yellow and blue. Another hand painted bay leaves garland follow it. The back of the urn is adorned with a hand painted country scene of a castle beside a river that is framed by a garland of gilt leaves and a bouquet of roses. The neck of the urn depicts a scene of a lady seated in a bench and the base depicts a tambourine decorated with a quiver and some arrows. Both of them are also framed as above. The urn is bronze mounted and enhanced by sphinxes handles at each side of the neck. The bottom of the neck is embellished by a bronze collar made of scrolls and leaves. A round bronze base with acanthus leaves and lion paws feet that is decorated with scalloped swags enhanced by tassels and beads supports the porcelain urn. The top of the lid is enhanced with a gilt bronze pine cone that serves as a finial. The painting of the urn is signed Melo.
