A very large and unique white marble mortar from the 16th century with sculpted side mascarons.
Mascaron were decorative architectural element in the form of a sculpted face or head, often depicting a human, animal, or mythical figure. Traditionally used in classical and Baroque architecture, mascarons were typically placed on keystones, arches, fountains, facades or home objects.
While they were originally functional, serving to ward off evil spirits or convey symbolic meanings, today mascarons are more commonly used for their ornamental appeal.
This impressive piece has a great patina and character. It looks impressive set in a coffee table or console table. This is a stupendous and solid piece. Truly one of a kind.
