Maling Pottery Pail and Cover, Cetem Ware, 1908-1930

About the Item

Maling pottery pail and cover, Cetem ware, 1908-1930. The tall cylindrical pail and cover with removable wicker handle is covered with a green swizzle design and with a wide floral band around the centre and rim. The recessed cover has a central circular hole. This type of pail was used to hold food waste from the kitchen to feed to farm animals. Introduced as a trade name in 1908, the Cetem Ware sunburst became the pottery's major mark until the mid-1920s. Much was made of the 'china-like' quality of the early wares and they were soon being sold in department stores worldwide, finding particular favour with Harrod's who often featured Cetem Ware in their catalogues. Dimensions: 9 3/4 inches high x 13 1/2 inches x 11 inch diameter. Mark: script pattern # 2349/A & CETEM WARE starburst. In 1908, with the sale of the packaging goods still buoyant, Maling introduced a new trading name for their decorative wares. This was Cetem ? Being a phonetic abbreviation of CT Maling and Sons. The following three decades were to be Maling?s heyday.
