About the Item

Monumental Pair of Covered Presentation Vases on Pedestals Christofle, Paris, circa 1864-1865 Grand neoclassical urn forms with waisted necks and slightly everted rims, fitted with domed, stepped covers and sculptural finials; the tapering bodies rising from a moulded knuckle above a circular socle and foot. Twin scroll handles spring from foliate clasps, their terminals anchored by finely chased acanthus buds and husk trails. The lower body is encircled by a bold collar of cast acanthus and fleur-de-lis motifs, the fleur-de-lis reserved within small roundels and linked by pierced scrolls—an unmistakably French flourish typical of Christofle’s late-19th-century “exposition” bravura. The plain mirror-polished side of each body is centered by an elegant script monogram “CG”, engraved within a lightly defined cartouche, reinforcing that these were special-order presentation pieces rather than stock models. Covers are surmounted by sculptural foliate Provenance: Private collection, [Beverly Hills, Ca) reportedly a unique commission executed in two examples only.
