About the Item
This pair of English garden urns has a very appealing ochre and gray hue, making them attractive garden ornaments. The Neoclassical-style urns, which have been cast in two sections, are supported by a rectilinear plinth. Each side of the plinth has a recessed panel that is filled with tas de sable protuberances, set in between subtle ogee molding to the base and top.
The urns themselves have a thick square foot beneath a concave neck adorned with multiple rings of gadroon. A third ring of lobes graces the bottom of the campana form urns, which are noted by their upside-down bell shape. The lobes are interrupted on opposing sides by a pair of male mascarons that form the base of large, lopping handles. A thick, rolled rim slightly overhangs a repeating fleur de lys motif that has scalloped leaves. In between the lobes and the fleur de lys is a panorama of six figures that wraps around the main body, possibly representing offerings to the deities of Greek mythology. These Neoclassical garden urns would look exceptional flanking a driveway, gate, or exterior entrance.

View AllPair of Large French Cast Garden Vases after the Models of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle
By Jean-Baptiste Pigalle
Located in Dallas, TX
After the original 18th century garden vases, entitled Autumn, by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, this pair of large cast garden vases are in the classic krater form. A sprawling scene with mascarons, rams’ heads, and grapevines are set between egg and dart molding and gadrooned lobes. Made with a mixture of crushed stone and cement (known as reconstituted stone), the tall vases were imbued with a cream coloring agent during the casting process. Each vase is supported by a thick rectangular plinth beneath a tapering neck adorned with geometric motifs and Vitruvian waves filled with flowers. These impressive garden vases will make a wonderful statement, inside or outdoors.
Originally part of a set of four vases depicting the seasons of Autumn and Spring, which were designed for the Chateau de Choisy by Ange-Jacques...
