About the Item

A most impressive pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. ormolu, silvered bronze and Rouge Griotte marble lidded urns. Each urn is raised by an elegant square Rouge Griotte marble base with concave corners decorated with beautiful finely detailed rosettes and fitted ormolu mounts with lovely interlocking designs. The ormolu socle pedestal displays most decorative fluted designs with a richly chased wrap around berried laurel band and fine acanthus leaves. The solid Rouge Griotte marble body is encased with foliate designs at the base and displays a wonderfully executed fitted interlocking wrap around ormolu band at the center with impressive finely detailed masks of bearded men below superb scrolled foliate and beaded handles leading upwards all in a striking satin and burnished finish. Above the elegantly curved neck is the outstanding ormolu rim with unique and most decorative beaded cabochon like and Vitruvian scroll wrap around bands, and the removable lid with exceptional wonderfully executed swaging berried laurel designs and a top finial. The lid lifts off to reveal the silvered bronze underside and finished interior. All original gilt throughout.
