About the Item

William Spratling (1900 - 1967) was an American born architect, designer and silversmith regarded as the founder of the modern Mexican silver movement. In 1929 he created a workshop in Taxco, Mexico and produced a prolific collection of sterling silver jewelry, silverware and decorative items. A friend of Diego Rivera’s, Spratling was responsible for bringing his work to the United States, after he facilitated Diego Rivera’s exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in New York in the 1930's.
