About the Item

A stunning example of mid-20th century Venetian glassmaking, this Murano vase is executed in the fazzoletto style—named for its resemblance to a handkerchief caught mid-twirl. The undulating rim and dynamic form are hallmarks of this technique, pioneered in the 1940s by masters on the island of Murano. The body of the vase features horizontal filigrana canes of translucent green and opaque white lattimo glass, expertly fused to create an elegant ribbon-like stripe that encircles the entire form. This filigrana technique—first developed in the 16th century and revived in the 20th—requires a remarkable level of precision, as the colored glass rods must be heated, aligned, and blown into shape without disrupting the delicate pattern. Supporting the vase is a gold-flecked “pasta” glass foot, which adds both visual weight and a touch of glamour. The gold leaf inclusions suspended within the base catch the light beautifully, anchoring the fluidity of the vase with a grounded, luminous presence. This piece not only reflects the technical innovation and artistry of Murano glassmakers during the post-war era but also captures the playful elegance of Italian design at its finest. A perfect object of beauty for collectors of historic glass, mid-century Italian design, or anyone drawn to timeless craftsmanship.
