Accolay Museal Hunting Scene Stoneware Vase, 1950s

About the Item

Museal and large French mid-century stoneware vase by Accolay, France, 1950s. African hunting scene. Warrior with his shield and spear chasing an antelope. Atypical decor at Accolay in terms of the nature of the decor and design. The baluster shape is embellished with horizontal concentric circles. Multi-layer cover treatment. The purple inner layer appears under a glossy glaze. The other colors, turquoise and gray typical of Accolay, constituting the upper layer are covered with a finely grained glaze. Some purple parts are covered with golden to underline the decor. The purple layer shows through the gray one creating aesthetic harmony. Inside, there is a gradient going from green at the neck to light yellow at the bottom. Signed on the bottom. Measures: Height : 17.5" (44.5cm), Diameter : 9.85" (25cm). From a certain angle, we see the neck slightly sagging on the body, this certainly due to the size of this vase (to be accurate, see photos). The condition is very good

  • ACCOLAY Vase, 1950s
    By André Baud
    Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR
Beautiful French Mid-century vase by ACCOLAY, France, 1950s. Concentric lines. Green, brown and purple. Anthracite speckled.. Height : 20cm (7.9"), Diameter : 18cm (7.1"). After the war “ceramic buttons” become very much a fashion item.As success comes, they decide to found a community and they settle on the 26th of October 1945 in an old unused factory in the Village of ACCOLAY in the Yonne department of Burgundy. In the year 1946, more than 3000 ceramic buttons and jewellery were leaving thisfactory, multicoloured and extraordinary pieces, in all sorts of different shapes, animal, vegetal, gold tinted…etc. In 1948 fashion was changing and they started making useful ceramics, decorative ornamental pieces, photo frames, fruit baskets and small ceramic sculptures. In 1952, Rafael GIAROUSSU, a Canadian painter and designer, became a member of the group. That was the beginning of very humoristic pieces from the Accolay potters. A large part of the population of the village of Accolay, would work in the studios, and in the sales department. Service stations on the road to the South of France that were selling their ceramics were becoming more & more numerous especially on the N6 & the N7. They continued their success well into the 70’s, up until the petrol crisis & also the fact that these roads were less...
