Amfora Küpü (Turkish Jug With 4 Handles)
About the Item
A revision to the myth – Pandora's box was actually an amfora: an elegantly-shaped ceramic vase with handles around its long neck. Amfora (from the Greek ""amphora,"" meaning 'on both sides' (amphi) and 'to carry' (phero)) have been used to transport water or wine since ancient times.
This 4-handled Amfora vase from Avanos was likely used to transport liquids from the storeroom to the sprawling sempozyum table, where guest's glasses awaited another pour. Or, in Pandora's case, the troubles of the world.
Located in the Cappadocia region of turkey, the town of Avanos is renowned for its ceramics: a tradition thought to date back to Hittite times (2000-1500 BC). The Red River (Turkey’s longest) has supplied generations of Avanos craftsmen with the iconic red clay, soft and ideal for the wheel, giving these pieces their distinct look. Many Avanos pottery studios are carved directly into the soft volcanic bedrock – providing natural insulation, cool environments to work in, and a daily connection between artist & natural environment.
*One-of-a-kind and marked by time, each of these pieces will show patina and natural imperfections. From oil stains to oxidation, we consider these alterations to be portals into a time long ago.
