About the Item

Art Deco vase circa 1930. Blown glass in a wrought iron and bronze frame. Signed A.Delatte Nancy. Height: 27 cm Base diameter: 10.2 cm Neck diameter: 10.8 cm André Delatte (born in Châtenois in 1887, died in 1953 in Toulouse) was an industrialist, master glassmaker, founder in 1921 of Verreries de l'Est SA whose workshops manufactured artistic glassware under the main brand ADelatte Nancy, in the Art Nouveau or Art Deco styles. Close to the Muller brothers, glassmakers in Lunéville, he visited their factory and discovered a real vocation for artistic glasswork, particularly chemistry. After studying the techniques, he opened, in 1919, a first glasswork workshop in Nancy, rue du Faubourg des Trois-Maisons, in which he decorated pieces blown by the Muller glassworks. In 1921, André Delatte opened his first furnace, a small artistic glass factory Les Verreries de l'Est SA in Jarville, near Nancy. From 1926, on the strength of its success, the factory expanded in Nancy itself, with the engraving workshops at 16 rue de Metz and the head office at quai Ligier Richier. During the same period, while success was on the rise, the workforce increased from around thirty to around sixty skilled workers, often simply poached from the competing glassworks Daum. Faced with this intrusion, Daum did not remain inactive: in 1922 it responded by bringing a lawsuit against Delatte glassworks for counterfeiting, but the appeal judgment dismissed Daum's claim. It is undeniable that if the two glassworks use the same techniques and that the productions are close, in particular by acid-etched or enamelled vases with naturalist decoration, Delatte creates its own models which have their own style, a "trademark". Due to the competition with Daum, but especially the great crisis, the factory is the subject of an amicable liquidation in the thirties. Subsequently, André Delatte, after the closure in 1938 of his factory in Nancy, created in Rive-de-Gier, a major glassmaking center, the company "Art et Verrerie" - ephemeral attempts to resume production; however this new company name Art et Verrerie was not crowned with success, and saw the definitive closure of the Delatte establishments.
