About the Item
Antique Japanese Cloisonné Vase – Meiji Period – “Fukuju Kaku” Mark
A beautifully executed antique Japanese cloisonné vase dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912). This rounded baluster-form vessel is intricately decorated in vibrant enamel colors over a copper body, displaying a rich turquoise ground with detailed motifs of auspicious items, including scrolls, coins, and flowers, all outlined in gilt copper wire.
A striking frieze encircles the upper shoulder with large cartouches containing Chinese-style characters: 福 (fuku – good fortune), 禄 (roku – prosperity), 寿 (ju – longevity), and 喜 (kaku – happiness), alternating in cobalt blue and white enamel, bordered in red-brown enamel.
The vase is finished with a plain bronze foot and neck ring and bears a square seal mark at the base.
The inscription in the square mark indeed reads:
福壽堂造
(Fukuju-dō zō)
Translation:
福 (Fuku) = Good fortune
壽 (Jū / Ju) = Longevity
堂 (Dō) = Hall or workshop
造 (Zō) = Made or manufactured
So the full translation is: "Made by the Hall of Good Fortune and Longevity."
This attributes it to a Japanese Meiji-period cloisonné workshop, most likely active in the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1880–1920). These types of marks were used by workshops producing cloisonné for both domestic use and export, often reflecting auspicious themes.
