Antique Emile Gallé Vase Art Nouveau Period in Orange Glass

About the Item

Small French Emile Gallé vase in orange glass. Signed Galle’. Produced in circa 1910. Émile Gallé Émile Gallé (Nancy, 4 May 1846 - there, 23 September 1904 ) was a French glass maker and furniture designer who had his home base in his birthplace. His favorite motif, which he often used in his work, was the plant. There were also many insect motifs. The glass is decorated single or multi-colored with elegant natural motifs. Gallé used different techniques: • colorless crystal glass with enamel painting; • verrerie parlante, glasses with opaque painted decorations that symbolize a mood inspired by poetry ; • opaque , semi-transparent glass with opaque painted decorations; • marquetry de verre, glass-in-glass marquetry; • superimposed glass with an image applied by an etching process between two layers ; imposed glass in a coarser edition, made with templates. Emile Gallé took over the factory from his father Charles in 1877. He installed ovens and used flora and fauna in his work. He engaged top professionals to carry out his work. His vases were also very expensive at the time. The well-to-do bourgeoisie thought a Gallé vase looked chic in their interior. In 1884, 1889 and 1902 he took part in major exhibitions in Paris and Turin. Works that won prizes at these exhibitions now fetch astronomical sums from collectors. 250 000 euros is no exception. After his death in 1904, his wife Henriette Grimm took over the factory. Thanks to the many artists and craftsmen, the glassware remained at the top level. More and more houses were supplied with electricity. The factory successfully made the well-known mushroom lamps. In 1914 Mrs. Grim dies. Emile Gallé had 4 daughters with her. The son-in-law Paul Pedrizet takes over the factory. Under his leadership, the famous blow-out vases are designed. The elephant, plum and rhododendron vases are examples of this.
