About the Item

A handsome pair of Kayserzinn antique vases in highly polished pewter by J. P. Kayser & Sohn AG of Krefeld, Germany, dating circa 1898-1900.. The tall and slender bodies have a reflective warm silver glow ornamented with delicate, natural motifs characteristic of the Art Nouveau / Jugendstil period. The design features overlapping embossed leaves encircling the lower part of each vase; the shoulders consist of a trio of low-relief cyclamen blossoms with stems arching into handles around a petal form rim. Very good original condition with some light scratches, measuring 11 in. H. One foot is very slightly bumped on one side but does not impact the stability or design. The first vase is marked 10 / Kayserzinn / 4229 / X / P and the second vase is marked U / 15 / Kayserzinn / 4229 / P. This vase model [4229] is published in Gerhard Dietrich and Eckard Wagner's, catalog raisonné, Kayserzinn: Engelbert Kayser, Jugenstil Pewter from Cologne, p. 172, no. 4229. Kayserzinn was the trademark name for the artistic lead-free metal alloy manufactured at the turn of the century by J.P. Kayser & Sohn of Krefeld, Germany, The company hired artists and sculptors to design high-quality objects in the Art Nouveau and Jugendstil style, marking them with model numbers beginning at 4000 in 1894-1895 and ending at 4999 in 1925. The firm was awarded gold medals from important international expositions in Paris (1900), Turin (1902), and St. Louis (1904).
