Art Deco Cubist Vase signed Anatole Riecke from La Coupole Paris France
About the Item
A small distinctive vase, fashioned with period cubism etched designs. This is another of our collection of pieces that were once used at, and perhaps sold, through the legendary La Coupole Brasserie in Paris. Signed and dated (often indicated as month, day and two digits for the year).
Purchase a part of French history.
La Coupole Brasserie was founded in 1927 and once a leading center of artistic life. La Coupole is now the epitome of the grand Paris brasserie in Montparnasse. Former patrons included Josephine Baker, Henry Miller, Picasso, Dalí, Calder, Hemingway, Fitzgerald and many others. Some of the artists painted on the columns or added their creations to the decor.
This glass vessel bears the signature of the artist A. Riecke, a very talented cubist artist who lived and worked in Paris in the early 20th century. His name and date are etched in the glass as part of the decorative detail, dated (often indicated as month, day and two digits for the year).
Anatole Riecke was responsible for the Art Deco glass decor of restaurant La Coupole.
The term 'Cubist' was a derisive description by a critic of a geometric landscape painting done by Braque in 1908. Juan Gris, the originator of Collage, joined Picasso and Braque in 1910.
