About the Item

This “singes” pâte-de-verre vase features a garden trellis collar above a frieze depicting seated purple monkeys framed within black arches, with stylized morning glories filling the spaces between. The cylindrical body, flaring at the mouth, is decorated with bold black stripes set against a mottled ground of off-white and purple. Item #: YG-22080 Artist: Gabriel Argy-Rousseau Country: France Circa: 1923 Dimensions: 12" height. Materials: Pate de Verre Glass Signed: on the side with impressed “G. Argy-Rousseau” Literature: Pictured in the book G. Argy-Rousseau, Glassware as Art by J. Bloch-Dermant, pg 188 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: Gabriel Argy-Rousseau was a master of combining the stark geometry of the Art Deco aesthetic that dominated during his time and the naturalism that he was so drawn to; this vase is a perfect example of a marriage between the naturalism of the previously popular Art Nouveau period and the more current architectural lines and compositions of the 1920s.
