Maria Longworth Nichols Storer is best-known as the founder of Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati, Ohio, but between the years of 1897 and 1900 she also created a strikingly unique and creative body of metalwork. Storer’s interest in the medium began in 1894 when Rookwood established a metalwork department overseen by Japanese artisan, and friend of Rookwood decorator Kataro Shirayamadani, Yosakichi Asano. She had previously developed an interest in Japanese art and design, as so many of her contemporaries did, in response to the Japanese metalwork display from the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. When Rookwood’s metalwork department closed in 1897, the opportunity arose for Storer to work directly with Asano, who came from the major bronze center of Kanazawa and was considered to be one of the most skilled metalworkers from that region. Scholarship indicates that Storer probably received only manual assistance (such as casting and electroplating) with the process of metalworking from Asano, as she did not employ traditional Japanese techniques nor did she work in solid bronze. Rather, Storer chose to use tin which she would then patinate to imitate bronze. It is thought that she chose these methods and techniques in order to have the greatest amount of control over the entire fabrication process: traditional bronzes must be cast in a foundry by metalworkers, but tin can be melted at a low temperature in a kitchen or studio. Storer exhibited her metalwork at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900 and though her display received a gold medal, a complete lack of examples post-dating that year suggest she discontinued her metalworking efforts after the Exposition. Following Paris, some of her metalwork was shown at the Cincinnati Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art where, in both cases, her work was greeted with great success. Though short-lived, Storer’s metalwork is illustrative of the innovative and experimental approach she applied to every aspect of her career. Her “bronzes,” as she referred to them, remain as a testament to the creativity and design talent of one of the most important women in the history of decorative art at the turn of the 20th century. - Rago
