About the Item

This extra-small Turkish vase with one handle and a stripe is from Avanos: a town located in the Cappadocia region of Turkey, which once ran through the historic Silk Road trading route. This piece was created in modern times, using ancient techniques and a local red clay that links the vessel to a rich, layered history. The amfora design (from the Greek ""amphora"") is a design traditionally used for carrying water or wine. In a modern home, it holds flowers, foliage, herbs, or whatever delights you. Avanos is renowned for its pottery (made from local red clay supplied by the Red River, Turkey’s longest) and its mystical “fairy chimneys” that dot its geography. These natural rock spires are made from deposits of that same red clay over the ages. Residents learned that the soft bedrock was ideal for building homes and storage spaces. Many Avanos pottery studios are carved directly into the soft clay hillsides – providing natural insulation, cool environments to work in, and a daily connection between artist & natural environment. *One-of-a-kind and marked by time, each of these pieces will show patina and natural imperfections. From oil stains to oxidation, we consider these alterations to be portals into a time long ago.
