Beautifully Aged Vintage Tamegroute Pitcher / Vase C1920s

About the Item

Original Tamegroute eathernware pitcher with vivid iconic deep green glaze specific to this small town on the edge of the Sahara. This version showing the qualities of earlier pieces - the definition and depth of green blue colouration, the attention to eccentuated forms. With feature splayed rim showing exquisite earthen rust coloured patination from use and wear. tamegroute: A town located in the Draa River valley in southern Morocco. It historically served as a hub of learning and religion through its famous Sufi zawiya. This was a historical center of the Nasiriyya order, one of the most influential Sufi orders in the Islamic world and infamous as a place of highly skilled artisan potteries. The signature green glaze contains a high proportion of manganese, silica, cobalt, a hint of copper, barley flour, and a particular type of rock found in local mines a few hundred kilometers away. The concoction is mixed with water in a huge basin and left to thicken for about a week. But it’s the firing process that is thought to be key to the multi-shade green color that has yet to be replicated elsewhere.
