Bertil Vallien (born Erik Bertil Wallin on January 17, 1938 in Sollentuna, north of Stockholm) is a Swedish artist and designer, internationally known for his sand-cast glass sculptures and symbolic narrative designs. After graduating as the top student from Konstfack School of Arts in Stockholm in 1961, he received a royal scholarship and spent time in Mexico and the USA before returning to Sweden in 1963 to join the Åfors/Kosta Boda glassworks. There he pioneered his signature technique of sand casting, producing enigmatic works such as boats, heads, and mystical forms layered with symbolic meaning. His wine-glass series Château became a global bestseller and helped save the Johansfors glassworks from closure. Among his major public commissions is the monumental glass altarpiece at Växjö Cathedral (2000–2002), rich with biblical symbolism. Vallien has received numerous awards including the Prince Eugen Medal (1995), an Honorary Doctorate from Växjö University in 2002, and the Glass Art Society’s Visionary Award. He was married to fellow artist Ulrica Hydman Vallien from 1963 until her passing in 2018.
