About the Item

Bodil Kjaer Skyscraper Vase For Cassina Skyscraper is made of transparent glass mechanically pressed into a cast-iron mould to create the shape of a building and its elegant architectural details, an extremely arduous process, due to the considerable thickness of the glass. Its sculptural shape is achieved through a particularly complex glass process requiring excellent artisan skills It was in 1963 that Bodil Kjaer designed a family of four vases featuring contours and decorations reminiscent of the architectural elements of building facades. In partnership with the Danish designer, Cassina revisits the largest Skyscraper vase and puts it back into production. In this re-edition, architecture is still the key feature and the sculptural shape of the vase is achieved through a particularly complex process requiring excellent artisan skills. Skyscraper is made of transparent glass mechanically pressed into a cast-iron mould to create the shape of a building, an extremely arduous process, given the considerable thickness of the glass. Furthermore, to recreate the architectural details of Skyscraper, the glass must be processed at extremely high temperatures to make it as fluid as possible so it can adhere to the shape of the mould. In this new re-edition of Skyscraper, designed by Bodil Kjær in the early 1960s, architecture is still the core ingredient. The shape of the vase, revealed by the name itself, is reminiscent of a skyscraper. Its sculptural form is achieved through a complex process and the refinement of the glass intensifies its bold aesthetic impact. She was educated in Denmark, England and the USA, and practised as an architect, designer and planner from her own offices in Copenhagen and London. Between 1955 and 1963, while designing public interiors she developed a series of elements of architecture to solve problems of functional and aesthetic nature. These pieces of furniture, lamps and glass were not designed directly for production but, as other architects discovered them and wanted them for their buildings, they were put into production and marketed in the USA as well About The Manufacturer: Established in 1927 by Cesare and Umberto Cassina in Meda, Italy, Cassina launched industrial design in Italy in the 1950s, based on a totally innovative approach that marked the transition from artisan production to mass production. With a mindset focused on research and innovation, Cassina combines technology and long-standing artisan craftsmanship. Memory, research, innovation. Cassina blends traditional skills and superior productivity, meticulous attention to detail and passion, uniqueness and experimentation, wellbeing and sustainability. Today, the company continues to address new lifestyles with the creation of complete, harmonious interior decor solutions that embody the best contemporary design for all areas of the home.
