Bohemian Art Nouveau Harrach Blue to Clear Cameo Glass Vase 1900

A vibrant Art Nouveau purple to clear intaglio cut Harrach vase with rare shaped 'cut-out' top outlining the higher buds. Depicting Flowering Lilies highlighted with gilding. This style of intaglio cut vase (with cut-out top) was taken by Harrach to the 1900 Paris exhibition. Very unusually this vase has stylised geometric cuts radiating from the base. Harrach has been the backbone of Bohemian, and possibly European, glass for the last 300 years. It proudly celebrates its tri-centenary in 2012. Before Ludwig Moser was allowed to have his own Glassworks he, like almost everyone else in the region, bought his blanks from Harrach. In fact we will probably never know how much glass, supposedly made my other great glass makers of Europe, were in fact made and finished in the Harrach Glassworks. A rare early Victorian Harrach cameo vase in blue, cased on both sides with opaque white, and cut to blue on the outside to reveal a stylised decoration and a floral/botanical scene -highlighted in gilding. Generally Cameos were considered to have been invented by the Romans and then recreated by the British in the last quarter of the 19th century. The reality is Cameos were being produced in Bohemian much earlier than that -this Harrach vases...
