About the Item
This large red glazed ceramic vase, hand-thrown by British studio potter David Frith at Brookhouse Pottery circa 1980s, is a striking example of modernist studio pottery with pronounced East Asian influences. Its tall, architectural form—a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Chinese meiping—features squared shoulders, a sharp upper break, and a narrow neck with a subtly flared lip.
The surface is finished in a rich reduction-fired copper red glaze, overlaid with expressive wax resist decoration. Organic brush strokes and abstract motifs, drawn from Japanese and Chinese ceramic traditions, introduce rhythm and contrast, enhancing the sculptural presence of the form.
Measuring 51 cm high and 21 cm wide, this statement piece is signed to the lower body with Frith’s twin debossed circular seals. It serves equally well as a floor-standing vase, entryway sculpture, or a commanding ceramic accent in minimalist, wabi-sabi, or mid-century interiors.
A refined and collectible example of 1980s British studio ceramics, notable for its cross-cultural references and masterful execution.
