The thistle of Lorraine is a source of inspiration for the Art Nouveau and the School of Nancy
It is an artistic movement that lasted only about thirty years, from 1884. The arrival of the First World War put an end to it.
Nancy rustled under the talent of the craftsmen and industrialists who worked at the very end of the 19th century and the very beginning of the 20th century.
Carpenters, cabinetmakers, architects, glassmakers, ironworkers and stained glass artists all contributed their know-how to create an unprecedented artistic movement: the "Nancy School", a burgeoning current of Art Nouveau based on a theme that inspired them: nature.
Did you know that? The motto of Lorraine, "Qui s'y frotte, s'y pique", dates from the time of René II (1451-1508), the Duke of Lorraine.
It refers to the thorns of the thistle, imported then from the region of Angers.
Today, it remains the motto of the ASNL, the soccer club of Nancy and the thistle is also present on the coat of arms of the city of Nancy.
