Caroline Blackburn Lava Vase, Signed 2019

About the Item

Caroline Blackburn Lava Vase, Signed 2019 This exclusive Lava vase series by Caroline Blackburn, measuring 18 inches in height, 12 inches in width, and with an approximate opening of 1 ½ inches, features a signature on the underside when flipped over "Caroline Blackburn 2019." Caroline Blackburn is an award-winning native Los Angeles sculptural ceramic artist, who creates vessels that represent the optimism of possibility. The artist explores her interests in abstract painting, architecture and nature through clay. Trained as a painter, her sculptural ceramic work focuses on bringing a freshness and immediacy to each piece through color, form, and surface texture. The artist approaches glazing like painting a canvas. She may first apply a slip, draw on the work with a ceramic pencil, and then hand-paint each piece with brushes of a variety of widths to accomplish a painterly effect and then, finally, grinding the surface with a stone. Blackburn utilizes size, shape, color and texture in unusual and rule-breaking ways to construct art works infused with tension created by combining oppositions – the conflicting and compatible, contemporary and ageless, soft and textured, thrown and hand-built, and the perfect and imperfect. There’s something inviting about the bubbled crusty surfaces of Caroline Blackburn’s pottery. Rustic and minimal, it could very easily have been unearthed on a dig, an archeologist’s brush revealing its’ beautiful glazed secrets. A native of Los Angeles Blackburn studied Art History and Studio Arts at Boston College, earning a MFA at the Art Centre College of Design, Pasadena. The artist hand builds each form and creates unique, experimental glazes in her studio. This one-of-a-kind stoneware piece is fired to approximately 2335 degrees and is signed by the artist.
