About the Item

A ceramic vase in the form of a "moon jar", a nearly sphere shape with small base and mouth. The form was celebrated in Korean Joseon pottery and its form and philosophy impacts the potters across the globe. The vase was made by American potter Otto Heino (1915-2009) in the last year of his life in his studio in Ojai, California, 2009. Wheel thrown with intentional concentric lines, the surface of the jar is covered in a brown-ochre color glaze splattered with random black and grey ash marks On the base, it bears the artist's mark and the year "09". Vivika and Otto Heino were artist duo working in ceramics throughout the second half of the 20th century. They collaborated as a husband-and-wife team for thirty-five years, signing their pots "Vivika + Otto," regardless of who actually made them. Clean lines and distinctive glazes mark their work; avoiding ceramic trends, they focused on traditional and utilitarian pottery. They were part of a generation that sought to redefine the relationship between ceramics and modern art. The Heinos were awarded the Silver Medal from the International Ceramics Exhibitions in Ostend, Belgium in 1959 and the Gold Medal at the Sixth Biennale Internationale de Céramique d'Art, in Vallauris, France in 1978. Their work can be found in private collections and institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Smithsonian Institution. After Vivika's passing in 1995, Otto continues to work in his CA studio and signed his work "OTTO".

Ceramic Vase with Bespoken Glaze by Makoto Yabe
By Makoto Yabe
Located in Atlanta, GA
Made by Japanese ceramic artist Makoto Yabe (1947-2005), this stoneware vase features a globular body supported by a round pedestal foot. A similarly shaped neck extends to a rimmed mouth opening. Robust in form with thick wall, the vase is noted for its irregular cloved form. The surface is covered in a beige-yellow glaze, on top of which, dark brown strokes and thick white feldspar slip were artistically applied in a splashed and washed pattern. Together with some random shallow incision lines, they form an abstract painting with textured surface where some slip forms small droplets at the end of the stroke. The work was created in traditional Japanese manner and reflects the beauty of Wabi Sabi, a Zen aesthetic for the imperfect perfection. The base was incised with the artist's cipher. "Makoto Yabe's work beautifully exemplifies the transmission of Japanese ceramics to the West. Born in Fukushima, Japan, Yabe began studying ceramics in Kyoto at the age of nine. He completed his training at the age of 24, with a four-year apprenticeship under Jinmatsu Uno and Sango Uno. Yabe then came to Boston, where he was an integral member of the local ceramic community, yet he maintained his Japanese roots. As an instructor of ceramics, Yabe worked in the Boston area at numerous schools and universities, touching the lives of all his students and expanding their knowledge and appreciation of studio ceramics." Large Ceramic Vase with Banded Glaze by John Ward
By John Ward
Located in Atlanta, GA
A large stoneware vessel with distinct form by British studio potter John Ward (1938-2023) circa last quarter of 20th century. The form of the vase as in the artist's repertoire may be known as a "Disc Pot" due to its unique shape. It features a round flattened body that organically morphs into a tapering neck with a slightly dipped neckline. It calls to mind the Chinese "moon flask", whose origin was likely attributed to the nomads of the Islamic Central Asia. The pot is covered with a mottled cream glaze specked with brown marks, mimicking the earth deposits on an archeological object...
