About the Item

A very beautiful Chamottevase by Gunnar Nylund - Rörstrand, glazed and stamped, 16cm of height. A beautiful piece wherever you put it. Gunnar Nylund was born in Paris, where his Danish mother the artist Fernanda Jacobsen-Nylund and his Finnish Swedish father, the sculptor Felix Nylund was studying. The family moved 1907 to Copenhagen, and they also lived in Helsingfors. Just before the outbreak of the Finnish Civil war he moved with his mother to Denmark in 1917 where he continued his studies until graduating in 1923. The year after he studied architecture and ceramics in Finland and later began his studies to become an architect in at the fine arts academy in Charlottenborg in Copenhagen. He was assisting his father and thus became a student of sculpture who encouraged home to study animals in Zoological gardens. Whilst studying architecture he made a living by working as an illustrator partly as a freelance for Bing & Grøndahl, being offered employment in 1925. Finishing his studies at the architecture academy, his main influences was the Bauhausschools strict shape and form, that was to be recognised in his functional kitchenware and china. At Bing & Grøndahl Nylund to start had Paul Gauguins son Jean René Gauguin as a mentor. It was an inspiring period and Gunnar Nylund created some 2000 unique pieces from 40 cm urns to small miniatures, that over the years became his speciality. When Bing & Grøndahl got a new more conservative artistic leadership Nylund decided to lave his employment and started together with the chemist Nathalie Krebs the ceramic workshop Nylund och Krebs. in connection with a large exhibition in 1930 at BO in Copenhagen the launched the brand Saxbo. They where mentioned in the press for their stoneware in mat feldspathic glaze, often undecorated and in bright colours unusual for the period, most of it was produced in series with was a new way of thinking According to an art critic they became trendsetters The Saxbo-stoneware was also noted at their exhibition at Svenskt Tenn in Stockholm 1930 and it led to that Gunnar Nylund was offered and employment at Rörstrand the following year.
