Chinese Black Clay Vessel, circa 1900

About the Item

Sculpted during the early 20th century in China's Shanxi province, this vessel has a smoky grey-black exterior with a beautifully irregular unglazed surface. Charged with the humble task of storing dry goods, this tall earthenware jar has a tapered form with a narrow base, high shoulders and a rounded neck. Left undecorated, the jar has a quiet beauty, patterned only by firing imperfections and the brushed texture of its mottled slip clay finish. With rich surface texture, we love this storied vessel as a planter for garden foliage or indoor houseplants. Additional Dimensions: Diameter of Opening: 9.5".
