Chinese Blue and White Chrysanthemum Ginger Jar

This large, tapered ginger jar continues a centuries-old tradition of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain ware. Painted with expressive brushwork, the jar is festooned with trailing vines and flower blossoms, densely patterned around large chrysanthemum medallions. Common motifs in Chinese art, chrysanthemums are emblems of autumn and symbols of longevity and happiness. The jar's high shoulders are topped with faux handles shaped as mythical fu lion dogs and finished with a crackled clear glaze.
