Chinese Canton Enamel Baluster Vase & Cover with 4 Landscape Reserves, 20th C.

About the Item

Chinese Canton Enamel Baluster Vase and Cover with Four Landscape Reserves, 20th Century 2 Pieces, Vase and Cover A beautifully enameled Chinese baluster-form vase and cover, dating to the 20th century, likely from the Canton (Guangzhou) enamel workshops. The vase rests on a flared pedestal foot and features a domed lid surmounted by a gilt-metal or bronze finial in bud form. The body is adorned with a vibrant yellow-ground scrolling floral and foliate motif, executed in fine cloisonné-style linework, although this is a painted enamel on copper—commonly referred to as Canton enamel. Framed within shaped cartouches on the four sides of the body are hand-painted landscape vignettes rendered in sepia tones with iron-red washes. These scenes depict traditional Chinese shanshui (mountain-water) compositions, showing secluded villages, temple complexes, bridges, pine trees, and riverside pavilions nestled among craggy peaks—symbolizing the harmony between man and nature. Each reserve represents an idealized vision of literati retreat, echoing themes from classical poetry and painting. The finely executed yellow floral ground is populated with lotus, chrysanthemum, and peony blossoms, signifying purity, longevity, and wealth, respectively. The use of bright enamel tones, especially the imperial yellow ground, reflects Qing decorative taste carried into the 20th century, likely for the export or scholar-art market. The form—with its high shoulder, narrow neck, and broad foot—is a variation of the traditional baluster or gu-shaped vase, intended for altar or decorative use. The interior and base are coated in white enamel, with typical firing speckles visible. Condition: Very good vintage condition. Minor pitting and specks to interior enamel and light wear to gilded edges and finial consistent with age. Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Pair of Chinese Export Porcelain American* Market Landscape Vases & Covers China, Circa 1800 * American/ European Market, considered to the Chinese to be the same market, by many. it's been suggested the front and back vignettes of houses in landscape on this model, were painted from a European print the Chinese porcelain workshops acquired. A extraordinary find, a pair of Chinese Export Porcelain American/ European Market painted in sepia, colors and gilt vases & covers, with twelve (12) placed American/ European and Chinese motif vignettes. Each vase complete with its original cover/ lid with gilt recumbent foo-dog, with two front and back oval vignettes of a Chinese tree in landscape. Each of the baluster vases, exquisitely hand-painted front and back with a similar American/ European topographical view of country houses with trees landscape. (The Chinese porcelain workshops probably copied these scenes from a European print) Surrounded by an elaborate painted and enameled trellis with vines and leaves. Some traces worn, additional gilt decoration is evident. Both sides of the vases are decorated with an upper elongated cartouche painted...
