Chinese Qing Dynasty Archaistic Bronze Ovoid Baluster Vase

$8,500

About

The vase of elegant ovoid baluster form and featuring well cast archaistic designs. The main design cast as a pair of large taotie masks set upon a leiwen diaper ground, with a pair of opposing kui dragons on either side of the mask. The upper and lower bands both cast as a series of stylized cicadas with kui dragons upon their backs, all upon a leiwen diaper ground. The rich patina of overall chocolate, with areas of rust near the mouth and foot, and moss on the body. The slightly recessed foot with a four character hall mark "Xiao Qing Tang Zhi" (made for the Hall of Smiling Youth). The form is not that of a traditional archaic bronze, but relates more to forms found in Song dynasty ceramics.
