About the Item

Christina Muff, Danish contemporary ceramicist (b. 1971). Bottle shaped sculptural vase in golden stoneware clay with slip from Frederiksberg in Copenhagen. The vase is glazed inside with clear shiny glaze. The slip is painted on the outside with large brushstrokes. This vase is part of the ‘Soil’ series. One of a kind. Signed by the artist. Measures: Height 27 cm. Width 16 cm. In perfect condition. Technique, Christina Muff’s forms are modelled by hand using ancient techniques; hand-modelling, coil- and mould-building. Starting with smooth slabs of clay she slowly shapes the intricate sculptures by hand, a time-consuming task as the forms require significant drying time in the process as the sculptures are most often large and detailed. When glazing Christina Muff employs various combinations of glazing techniques including brushing, dipping, pouring and many forms are fired numerous times to achieve the desired surface and color. The objective is to achieve texture and surface that resembles man-made items that nature has reclaimed. Bio, Christina Muff, contemporary ceramicist (b. 1971) studied design in Copenhagen at Margretheskolen in the 1990s and later at TEKO center in Herning, Denmark. She has worked in various media including painting, textiles, graphics and silver. Having had commercial successes in the fields of graphic art and jewelry, Christina now recognizes clay as her primary medium. Always self-employed Christina has lived in the US, Saudi Arabia and Europe, today residing in her native country of Denmark where her ceramic studio is located in the outskirts of Copenhagen. Series; Seed - The beginnings. Bursting with life. Series; Soil - Ancient. Unglazed or clear glazed to reveal the raw clay. Series; Salt - Manmade items that appear to be reclaimed by the sea.

Large Mid-Century Modern Stoneware Bottle Vase in the Style of Peter Voulkos
Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderful, richly multi-glazed and textured, heavy Mid-Century Modern large stoneware bottle vase. Expertly crafted. The piece is very reminiscent of some of Peter Voulkos' early hand-painted works with traditional shaped vessels, though we believe it was made by a different artist. From a Los Angeles estate that featured many well know Mid-Century and California artists' pottery pieces, artworks, and furniture. Marked "BOT 2" on the underside. Would be a great addition to any Mid-Century pottery/ceramics collection...
