About the Item

This skillful blend of Chinese art objects and French craftsmanship is attributed to the Escalier de Cristal after designs by Édouard Lièvre. Our cachepot displays a polychrome decoration of lotus flowers and wild birds in cloisonné enamel on a turquoise-blue background. The lower part of the body is adorned with green half-circles bordered in red, while the upper part alternates blue and red pointed motifs. The copper network of the cloisonné enamel features geometric patterns similar to certain Chinese vases from the Jiaqing period (1796–1820). A common practice in French decorative arts of the second half of the 19th century, the Chinese cachepot is mounted on a modern bronze base inspired by Far Eastern design. Executed and signed by Barbedienne, the brown-patinated bronze base was made after a design by Édouard Lièvre. The elephant heads whose trunks form the legs of the mount are typical of the Lorraine artist, as are the jeweled bands encircling the animals’ foreheads. The hatched decoration of the base is also a recurring element. On each side, dragon heads hold mobile handles with a scale pattern. This menacing mask, with its impish nose and mane shaped into volutes, is a decorative feature found exclusively in creations by the Escalier de Cristal.

BACCARAT, Pair of Vases with Japonist Decoration of Flowering Trees and Birds
By Baccarat
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
This pair of vases with Japanese-style decoration was made by the Baccarat glasshouse around 1880. Founded under Louis XV, the French Baccarat crystal factory demonstrated its excellence at the Universal Exhibitions throughout the 19th century. The company created these square vases in black crystal resting on a bronze frame. These works are adorned with a natural, highly poetic decoration executed using the technique of hot enamelling in relief. The bright colours stand out clearly against the background, highlighting the meticulous attention to detail that went into this decoration. The black colour of hyalite crystal is obtained by injecting slag or sulphur into the glass. This dark background enhances the painted decoration. In this case, it was used to create a decoration in imitation of Chinese or Japanese lacquer...

Napoleon III Vase in Porcelain of Paris Mounted in Gilt Bronze with Espagnolette
By Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
This exceptional monumental vase in porcelain of Paris, conceived in the spirit of the Sèvres Manufactory’s productions, is quite characteristic of the Napoleon III style . The long neck of the shape is extremely rare, as well as the gilt bronzes’ richness of ornamentation. Its dimensions and its important bronze mount indicate a ceremonial piece, of supreme luxury, comparable to those the Manufactory exhibited at the World's Fairs. Evoking the aristocratic art of the Ancien Regime in many ways, this vase pays tribute to the refinements of the 18th century, and could have been commissioned to decorate the mansion of a 19th century personality. Indeed, the “Celestial blue” background, embellished with gold arabesques, is characteristic of the porcelains from the Royal Manufactory of Vincennes as early as 1753, which became the Sèvres Manufactory. It is a famous blue, difficult to obtain, which served to decorate the first service delivered to Louis XV. The lively shapes of the bronze base also evoke the art of the ornamentalists in Louis XV’s time, such as Jean-Claude Duplessis or Gouthiere, who were in charge of drawing gilt bronze mounts for China porcelain. The bronze mount of our vase is hence very close to the Duplessis’ ornementations. The two espagnolettes, with sheathed busts of women...
