The shapely forms of the pieces in the Explorer Collection, have been condensed into these vases. They are objects that are part of my cosmos, taken from my drawings. The materialisation of these requires great skill, because of the apparent contradiction of joining a ceramic rounded piece to another rounded shape.» Jaime Hayon The name Explorer reminds one of rockets that were sent to the moon and other planets for exploration. The artist and designer from Madrid, does the same with materials and shapes to make new creations. His language is always linked with the beauty and quality of artisanal manufacturing. This is a new addition to this very special collection, which started off with eye catching combinations and gloss finished side tables. The rounded shapes are matched up really well with the shades and colours chosen. These are different objects within the market and want to convert into singular ones, as they are not just functional, but sculpturally dynamic. About the designer Born in Madrid in 1974, Jaime Hayon boasts one of the most glittering careers in the recent history of contemporary design. Hayon forged his identity as a designer at Benetton’s Fabrica communications research centre, near Treviso, where he worked under Oliviero Toscani. He first arrived in 1997, and soon after was put in charge of the design department. He first worked with BD on the Mail Me project while at Fabrica. In 2004, Hayon branched out on his own, settling in Barcelona and working on a number of projects while also exhibiting his more personal work. His exhibition Mediterranean Digital Baroque at London’s David Gill Gallery, plus the ArtQuitect bathroom collection, marked the beginnings of his international recognition. This way followed by the Showtime collection for BD and subsequent work with companies including Metalarte, Camper, Lladró, Bisazza, Swarovsky, and Moooi. Hayom currently lives and works in Valencia. The collaboration between Jaime Hayon and BD Barcelona Design started 15 years ago. Since,we have developed a ton of designs and variations together divided into three large collections: Showtime, Gardenias and Explorer. The Explorer family is the most recent.
