About the Item

Intriguing Japanese contemporary decorative porcelain vase, gilded and hand-painted in blue and red on a beautifully shaped ovoid pure white porcelain body, a signed piece by highly acclaimed master porcelain artist of the historic Imari-Arita region of Japan. This artist is known for his signature techniques in application of gold and platinum to porcelain painting. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain, a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition. Set against a background of fish scales in red, the vase combines two of the most revered auspicious motifs in traditional Japanese art. These are cranes and turtles that symbolize longevity, and sho-chiku-bai, or "The Three Friends of Winter," which combines pine trees, bamboo and plum blossoms to represent strength, perseverance and good luck in the face of adversity. Platinum and gold are generously used to accentuate the plumage of the cranes and the turtle’s shell. "Fired-on gold," his signature style highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum in the hand painting and multiple firing processes to create a stunningly opulent look. After firing the blue underglaze at 1,300 degrees Celsius, the polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees. Finally, gold or platinum is applied and fired at slightly lower temperatures to maximize the luster of the precious metals. To achieve a crisp separation of colors and materials, a single piece may undergo as many as ten firings. This attractive hand painted porcelain vase comes in a custom-made wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 8 in, D 8.75 in.
