About the Item

Iconic egg shaped brass flower frog / vase. Designed by silversmith Hans Bunde and manufactured by Carl Cohr in Fredericia, Denmark during the 1950s. Stamped Cohr, Denmark - to the base. It remains in beautiful un-polished vintage condition with a deep/rich patina. Carl Mads Cohr (11 August 1862 in Fredericia – 25 August 1925 in Silkeborg) was a Danish silverware manufacturer. Carl M. Cohr was the son of goldsmith Ditlev Madsen Cohr (1829-1883) and Sidse Anne Cathrine Jørgensen (or Caspersen). In 1887, at his own expense, he took over his father's goldsmith's business in Fredericia, which had been founded in 1860. At that time, he had already assisted his mother with the business for a few years after his father's death. According to the custom of the time, a small workshop was attached to the goldsmith's shop, and with the help of this, Cohr began to manufacture silver spoons, which he sold to goldsmiths in other Jutland market towns. In the course of a dozen years, the workshop had come to employ 16 men, and on the basis of this modest beginning, Cohr began a large-scale manufacture of silverware, which was sold both on the large domestic market and on the export markets in Sweden and Norway. In 1906, on the basis of a strengthened position, he was able to take over the Flérons Silverware Factory in Copenhagen. In the same year, the company was transformed into a limited company with Cohr as managing director and main shareholder. Cohr was both a far-sighted merchant and a competent craftsman, and under his leadership the company became the largest silverware factory in Scandinavia. From 1921, Carl M. Cohr A/S also produced objects in silver stain. He was also skilled at connecting the designers of the time to the factory, for example Knud V. Engelhardt. At the same time, Cohr contested a number of positions of trust in his hometown. He was an honorary member of the Craftsmen's Association and 1905-1913 a member of Fredericia City Council. In 1923 he became a Knight of the Dannebrog. He is buried in Fredericia. Hans Bunde Originally trained as a silversmith, Hans Bunde spent a large part of his career at the renowned silver company Carl M. Cohr, as director of the company's unique corpus department, the Corpus Silver Team. His elegant style represented Danish functionalism in the mid-20th century. To this day, his original designs are highly prized and fetch huge sums of money at auctions. Bund's artistic nature required him to play with other materials in addition to his work with silver. He designed objects in private life that were recognizable through his simple and elegant aesthetic. Many of these hidden treasures never went into production, but we are proud to present Penguin – one of his unique personal projects that appeals to design lovers of all ages.
