About the Item

This elegant smoky grey glass vase was created by renowned German glass artist Carl Rotter, whose workshop in Lübeck became known for its exquisite craftsmanship and distinctive engravings. The vase is made from particularly fine, delicate glass with a soft grey tone – a signature of Rotter’s refined aesthetic. What makes this piece truly special is the detailed engraving that encircles its surface: a charming silhouette of Lübeck’s historic skyline, including the iconic Holstentor – one of Germany’s most famous medieval city gates and a symbol of the Hanseatic city. Beneath the skyline, small fish are engraved into the glass, while seagulls soar above, adding a poetic, maritime atmosphere to the piece. This subtle decoration is typical of Carl Rotter’s work, which often combined traditional themes with modern clarity. The vase is both a decorative object and a piece of regional history – perfect for collectors of fine glassware or anyone with a connection to Northern Germany. It remains in excellent condition and is a beautiful example of mid-20th century German studio glass.
