Derby Botanical Vase, probably by William Pegg c. 1813-1820
About the Item
The central panel is an arrangement of flowers, in the manner of William 'Quaker' Pegg, based on the vivid palate of color, with some flowers looking quite disheveled in their deportment but with obvious intention, since every detail is finely depicted (down to the veins in the leaves), a quality level achieved by very few painters.
The basket is placed on a marble slab for background, a common sight in 1820's and 30's Derby botanical arrangements.
It is rare to find a piece of this high quality and of this monumental size, and Pegg is assuredly of the painters that Robert Bloor would have assigned this costly and monumental form.
