Andersen began working with metal in the early 1920s, having been trained as a sculptor. His early designs were inspired by the Art Deco style, but he soon developed his distinctive style that blended geometric shapes and handcrafted quality with an organic feel. Andersen was renowned for his hallmark contribution to modern Danish design with the invention and utilizing of the Disko metal alloy. While the precise composition of this alloy is unknown, it is believed to consist primarily of zinc, copper, and aluminum, with other metals added for texture and color. His lamps and vases in Disko metal, produced mainly during the 1930s, have become highly coveted among design enthusiasts due to their exquisite beauty and exceptional craftsmanship. Andersen’s fewer pieces made in bronze in bronze and silver are even more sought-after by todays collectors. Andersen's designs were extensively exhibited and sold throughout Europe and the United States. Today, his work is regarded as a vital part of the Danish design tradition, celebrated for its beauty, craftsmanship, and innovative use of materials.
