Edvin Öhrström for Orrefors Crystal Engraved Vase, 1942 Scandinavian Modern

About the Item

Vintage Orrefors engraved crystal vase features "Wish To The Moon" pattern, created by Edvin Ohrstrom in 1942. The pattern depicts a young woman or girl on the front side of the vase, who is gazing at the moon and stars that are engraved on the other side, creating a charming visual effect that can be affected by repositioning of the vase. The vase is marked with OF for Orrefors, F 2769.111 (F stands for the designer letter code, and the pattern number indicates that it was created in 1942, when numbers 2651 - 2774 were used), and the engraver info. Originally the vase was produced in 1940s, but it might have been reissued in 1960s; since there is no date on the mark, we estimate the date of manufacture as 1940s-1960s. Karl Edvin Öhrström (1906 - 1994) was a renowned Swedish sculptor and glass artist. He studied sculpture at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in 1928–1931, under the tutelage of Carl Milles and Nils Sjögren. From 1932 to 1957, he worked two months per year at Orrefors Glasbruk, where he helped to develop the Ariel technique, along with the Gustaf Bergkvist and Vicke Lindstrand. The Ariel technique, based on the Graal technique, has been widely used by various artists, initially from Orrefors, but later also from other manufacturers; the most famous Ariel pieces were made by Lindstrand, Öhrström, Hald, and Lundin. Early Öhrström work for Orrefors was shown at 1937 Paris ‘Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques clans la Vie Moderne.’ Later, Öhrström worked at Lindshammars Glasbruk, where he created glass and steel sculptures that played with light reflections and refractions in the glass; he was awarded the Prince Eugen Medal for sculpture in 1979.
