Ekenäs Sweden Engraved Crystal Vase, Glows in UV

About the Item

Vintage crystal vase features engraved Modernist decor depicting two people huddling under an umbrella beneath the bare branches of a large tree. The decor is placed in a way to emphasize the soft oval shape of the vase and wrapping the tree branches around the vase. The scale of the tree to the people gives one a heightened sense of the struggle they are having against the elements, or of the peace they will find under the protection of the massive tree. The vase design is attributed to John Orwar Lake, and the engraving execution - to Gert Claesson, who was a craftsman at Ekenäs Glassworks for many years. The vase is signed and numbered on the bottom; it is in good vintage condition with age-appropriate signs of use on the bottom. It glows in UV light, indicating the presence of uranium in the formulation. Ekenäs Glasbruk was founded in Sweden in 1917 by two former Orrefors workers, R. and H. Stahl. In 1922 the company was purchased by Sven Westberg, who run it until his death in 1962. Artists hired to design tableware and art glass at the company from 1930s included Tage Larsson, Hildur Haggard, and Greta Runeborg-Tell, who worked at the company from 1939 to 1950s, as well as Astrid Rietz and Edvin Ollers. John Orwar Lake was the chief designer and art director from 1953 to 1976, and Michael Bang worked for the company in 1960s. After Westberg death Ekenäs Glassbruk was managed by Claes Tell until its closure in 1976.
