About the Item
This rare Murano “Rostrato” vase, designed by Ercole Barovier for Barovier & Toso circa 1960, exemplifies one of the most iconic glassmaking techniques of the 20th century. Crafted in a striking cobalt blue, the vase is entirely hand-blown and features the distinctive “rostrato” surface—an intricate decoration created by applying rows of molten glass spikes individually to the vessel’s body. The result is a dynamic, sculptural object that plays beautifully with light and texture.
Ercole Barovier (1889–1974), one of the greatest masters of Murano, served as artistic director of Barovier & Toso for decades, bringing innovation and a modern vision to the company’s traditional craftsmanship. The “Rostrato” series, developed in the 1930s and continued into the postwar years, remains among his most celebrated designs, embodying both technical virtuosity and bold aesthetics.
This example is particularly remarkable for its intense blue coloration, a rarer variant within the series. Preserved in excellent vintage condition, it shows no chips or restorations, allowing its brilliance and sculptural impact to be fully appreciated. A must-have for collectors of Murano glass and 20th-century Italian design, this vase is not only a decorative object but also a significant work of glass art history.
