About the Item
An exceptional Maltese Mdina studio glass sand pattern vase by Eric Dobson and Michael Harris dating from around 1970.
Mdina glass was founded in 1968 by Michael Harris on the Island of Malta. Michael was a lecturer in industrial Glass design at the Royal College of Art in London and along with Eric Dobson moved to the island to create Malta’s first ever glass manufacturer. The designs were inspired by the Mediterranean coastline, the sandy beaches and the blue waters if the Mediterranean and the colors of sand and sea feature in many of the pieces produced at Mdina.
This stunning and quality example is heavily made standing on a narrow round flat polished base and is of simple round bulbous form with a narrow-pinched neck and wide flattened trumpet shaped top. The body of the vase is decorated with grainy sand-colored elements set amidst patterned streaked brown trailing designs. The vase is inspired by the beaches and rocky coastline. The vase is signed Mdina to the base and a very fine quality example of this style of glassware.
