About the Item

Hallmarked in London in 1880, this large sterling silver vase was made by S. Smith & Son. Designed in the Etruscan Revival taste, the vase features high-relief repoussé decoration with classical figures, birds, and scrolling foliage, all finely worked against a textured ground. The form draws on ancient amphorae, with twin handles and a flaring neck adding to its sculptural presence. The fluted lower body and tall foot are enriched with applied ornament, including anthemion borders and roundel motifs, all crisply defined. The repoussé decoration includes seated maidens, birds, floral scrolls, and a central winged figure—likely allegorical—set within a formalised foliate scheme. This type of classically inspired decoration was popular among leading silversmiths of the late Victorian period, particularly for presentation or exhibition pieces. The vase reflects the 19th-century fascination with antiquity, reinterpreted through the lens of Victorian craftsmanship. Dimensions: Height: 17.25 in. (44 cm) Width (handle to handle): 6.75 in. The upper rim of this impressive vase is encircled with an applied moulded border to the rim. The vase retains the original gilt interior.
